The Safest Food in the Room

February 16, 2015 by joshua iufer

I had a reader ask about food safety recently and the more I thought about it the more I realized it’s not often talked about. Look for an article on nutrition and you’ll find hundreds, look for something on food safety and you’re lucky to get even a few bites. Surprisingly enough, Dietitians are trained in food safety as well. Any career in Food Service, be it management, health inspector, or menu development, requires a decent understanding of food safety. It makes […]

Updates & Upgrades

February 11, 2015 by joshua iufer

It might not seem like much but there’s been some serious behind the scenes work going on around here. This might be a slight rant here but for all those who are new to blogging or thinking of starting your own, you’ll want to read ahead. WordPress is a great service and I do mean that with all honesty. It’s easy to get going, easy to start writing, and somewhat easy to customize. The problem, is that WordPress is a used-car salesman, […]

Digital Health Scale Tracking

Lessons Learned From 182 Weigh-Ins

January 27, 2015 by joshua iufer

Digital Health is here to stay and by most predictions will be one of the defining technology movements through 2020. For those that might not recognize the term, digital health is the coming together of technology, computers, data, and the entire Health field. What this means for us is difficult to pinpoint, but an example would be pairing gene testing with a specific diet, or letting your doctor access your Jawbone Up data to make better suggestions. I’ve mentioned the former […]

History of Modern Diets

A Modern History of Diets

January 12, 2015 by joshua iufer

It’s an interesting thing that so little of my actual experience revolves around “fad” diets. With a title like Dietitian you’d think there would at least be some course or seminar somewhere in my career that broke it all down. It’s the opposite in fact, I could probably count the number of fad diets mentioned in a medical setting on one hand. Step out into mainstream nutrition and suddenly everything is “diet this” and “diet that”. So over time I’ve […]

Keto Brain

December 31, 2014 by joshua iufer

It’s surprisingly common nowadays for people to hear about a diet, decide to follow it, but have little understanding as to how or why. I would say at least a quarter of the people I talk to who claim to be on a specific diet aren’t actually following it, simply from lack of understanding. So to start the new year I decided to dig into the diet I see this with the most, the Ketogenic (otherwise known as Keto) diet. What is […]

Nutrition By The Numbers 2014 Edition

December 18, 2014 by joshua iufer

Every year I like to do a post highlighting some of the trends in nutrition for the previous 12 months. It’s a way of peeking in at the underlying forces driving us, to try predicting what we’ll see in 2015 and beyond. If you haven’t checked out last years version, take a jump over to True Trends Don’t Lie real quick. For all of these I use Google Trends to see what’s being searched, you can do it yourself if you’re curious. […]

Faulty News at 11

December 10, 2014 by joshua iufer

I don’t know about you, but when I look at the world I’m constantly looking for things to “fix”. Either way there’s one problem, as a Dietitian and a supporter of scientific research, that really grinds me. The way science is spun. Let’s start with a study. Most of the well-done studies are published in major scientific journals which later flow into aggregators like PubMed and ScienceDirect. Not all mind you, but there’s still an impressive amount of content on these sites. Let’s […]

Why I Quit Fitbit (for now)

November 1, 2014 by joshua iufer

This week Google released their health dashboard app Fit for android phones. You might recall that Apple too recently announced a similar product called Healthkit. While both products are still in their infancy, it is great news to finally have a central location for all of my fitness and data tracking. The beauty of these services is that I can go for a Run or Bike using Strava, weigh myself via Withings Body Scale, and have my steps tracked via […]

Natural vs Chemical

October 27, 2014 by joshua iufer

I’ve heard it before, from both armchair nutritionists and random passers-by, a statement that truly makes me cringe, “If you can’t pronounce it, stay away from it”. Now let’s boil it down to the fact that this statement is essentially stating “If I don’t understand it, I won’t eat it”.  At least, that’s what I think most people are trying to say when convincing others to adopt their lifestyles. What I hear when someone uses this line is “I won’t eat anything […]

Plentiful Powdered Foods

September 16, 2014 by joshua iufer

Friends, we are at the doorstep of a radical new way to view the foods we eat. I’ve mentioned products like Soylent before, and I’ll be the first to admit I was initially weary of the idea. That was, until I started providing consults for some of the dieters. “It gives me a feeling that I can control food again”   “Even one meal a day is so much easier” These are some of my clients’ phrases I couldn’t get […]

Failing Hospital Food

September 11, 2014 by joshua iufer

I thought it would be a good bit of contrast to show you the difference between modern school lunch and modern hospital food service. Now, I will admit upfront that hospital foodservice is monumentally more challenging in terms of appeasing the “customer”. For one, most children don’t have serious medical disorders that limit their ability to eat. A rare day it would be to see a child eating pureed foods, or following a cardiac diet. 12 year old hearts just […]

Rise of the Digital Supermarket

August 15, 2014 by joshua iufer

“For the times, they are a changing” I’ve loved this song since I first heard it. Not just for the words, or the tune, but for the message it carries. Things change, people change, accept it or prepare to fight. Often my thoughts will wander in and out of particular mindsets, this week was  a futurist mindset from start to finish. The future of food is something I’ve talked about before, but I’ve reached a new place of understanding. A […]
